SSE – Trainee Engineering Programme
SSE is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity, in the production, storage, distribution and supply of gas and in other energy services. They offer an IT Degree Apprenticeship, aimed at students on track to achieve three A2 Levels (or equivalent), one of which should be in an IT related subject.
They offer a 3 year trainee engineer programme aimed at candidates with A levels (or equivalent) in Maths and Science. Trainee Engineers have a unique opportunity to combine work-based learning whilst studying towards an HNC in Electrical Engineering or a Diploma of Higher Education in Engineering, depending on the business area you work in. You will undertake various work placements to put newly-learned knowledge into practice, gaining practical, hands-on experience.
To apply, you’ll need a minimum of Maths and Science (preferably Physics) at A2 Level (grade A-C) or in Scotland SQA Highers level (grade A-B). Alternatively, or an equivalent qualification in a relevant Engineering subject, at a minimum of HNC level.
At the end of your training , you will qualified to work as an Electrical Network Engineer in the Energy Networks business or a Maintenance Engineer in the Generation & Renewables business.In years one and two, your time will be split between placements and university. In year three, you’ll be given management responsibility. You’ll work with experienced professionals in depots, power stations and control rooms and gain a qualification in Electrical Power Engineering.
