Going to university and pursuing a degree is not the only option available to bright students. With the significant cost of a degree combined with its potential devaluation, you may want at least to consider your options. There are a number of firms offering very attractive School Leaver Programmes. These are well paid and you may find run parallel to many graduate schemes. They have the attraction of being less competitive at A level entry, therefore gaining you entry into an organisation that you may struggle to secure as a graduate, when the competition is fiercer. You will also be debt free. These schemes are becoming increasingly popular with employers.
Banking: Bank of America Degree Apprenticeships
Bank of America offers a Degree Apprenticeship Programme. You will split your time between studying for a bachelors or master’s degree and a professional qualification while earning a salary and gaining relevant experience. Your tuition fees will be paid for by the bank. When you join, you’ll be part of a cohort focused on a specific line of business and supported by industry experts in their field. This is your chance to develop the skills and knowledge required to be successful in a variety of roles within the banking industry.
You will be taught key skills such as: planning and prioritization, leadership and communication; and technical skills. Academic requirements vary depending on the position and area.
Positions exist in Bromley and Chester.
Banking: Bank of England
The Bank of England offers a Future Capability Programme for those not planning to go to university. It offers opportunities in Operations, Technology and Statsitics.
The scheme focus on these three core areas of the Bank's work. The first, Banking Services, will see you undertaking operational Banking work - processing financial data and gaining first-hand experience of how they work. The second, Information Systems and Technology is all about providing technical support, solving problems and developing new applications. Finally there's Data Science, which will involve processing statistical data for use across the Bank.
Those joining on the Operations or statistics stream will have the opportunity to work towards an Advanced Apprenticeship in Business Administration. Those joining the Technology stream will have the opportunity to work towards an Higher Apprenticeship in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals.
Whichever route you choose, you'll follow a structured development programme for the first two and a half years. On this programme, you'll have plenty of support, along with the opportunity to study for professional qualifications relevant to your role and the Bank.
They want people who are eager to learn and serious about building a career in the financial sector. To apply, you'll need a minimum of five GCSEs at C and above, including English and Maths, and at least 180 UCAS points (either passed or predicted) from up to three A Levels or equivalent.
Banking: Barclays Higher Aprenticeships
Barclays provides five Higher Apprenticeship programmes that offer very different experiences, but they will all provide you with a combination of university/academic study and practical experience. Opportunities exist within:
- Internal Audit
- Human Resources
- Leadership & Management
- Relationship Management
You require 200 UCAS points in A-Level or equivalent, in any subject – or have at least 18 months’ work experience. In most of the routes, you will be supported to gain further qualifications. The management and ledaership supports you over 3 years in gaining a BA from Lord Ashcroft University in management. The finance role supports your study towards industry-recognised AAT Accounting qualifications and the audit role allows you to study for highly-respected Chartered Institute of internal Auditors IIA qualifications. The relationship management role allows you to Study for industry-recognised banking qualifications, and gain membership of a professional body and the HR role supports study for an industry-recognised, degree-level HR qualification.

Banking: Close Brothers
Close Brothers is a leading merchant banking group, providing lending, deposit taking, wealth management services, and securities trading They offer a two year Aspire programme aimed at school leavers.
The ASPIRE Programme
The ASPIRE programme gives school leavers the opportunity to start their careers in professional, challenging and fast paced businesses.
The programme is a two year rotational scheme and placements can last from six months to one year in one business area with trainees moving around various teams and departments. Very quickly you will work on the front line; handling queries from customers and working with sales teams. Learning is very much on the job with supportive teams and mentors. Closr Brothers also provide full sponsorship for the professional certificate in banking with the London Institute of Banking & Finance.
Who are they looking for?
You must have obtained GCSE grade B in Maths and English Language, and at least grades B, B, C at A-level (not inclusive of general studies).
Location: You must be mobile and willing to move to where the best placement opportunities are; some examples of popular locations are Wimbledon, Doncaster, Hove, Manchester and Northwich
Salary and Benefits: c£16,000 plus a competitive benefits package including eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus, a mobility allowance (to support a move out of current location/home to take up a placement in another part of the UK) of up to £4.4k per annum, a cycle to work scheme, season ticket loan, pension and life assurance.

Banking: Commerzbank Vocational Trainee Scheme
Commerzbank is a leading international commercial bank with branches and offices in more than 50 countries. They are offering a vocational Trainee scheme for bright A Level students. You require 3 A Levels at grades BBB or above.
The scheme provides trainees with the opportunity to work full time, whilst studying towards a higher education qualification via block release. Upon joining, you will be assigned to a business area within Commerzbank where you will stay for the duration of the scheme (three and a half years). Here you will learn to specialise in that particular area but at the same time you will also be exposed to other areas within the bank.
During the first two years, you will study towards a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Business & Finance at the European College of Business and Management (ECBM) and upon successful completion of the HND, you will study for a further year and a half to top-up to a BA (Hons) degree in Business and Management. The BA (Hons) is provided by ECBM and is accredited by the University of South Wales. All college fees are paid for by the bank on top of your basic salary. All trainees will start on the same salary and will continue on the same salary whilst on the programme.

Banking: HSBC Apprenticeships
HSBC offers 2 apprenticeships:
- Global Markets Operations Apprenticeship - This 12-month Apprenticeship offers you the opportunity to develop the foundation required in one of the most important areas of the Global Markets business. You will gain first-hand experience in managing and controlling the processing of trades and complex transactions, as well as providing post-trade support. This programme will prepare you for a successful career as an Operations Analyst within HSBC.
Following your induction, you will undertake a 12-month placement working within Global Markets Operations where you will receive structured exposure to functions such as Risk and Control, Change and Client Services. You will work with dynamic and highly skilled colleagues to gain detailed product knowledge; and provide post-trade support for large and complex projects carried out by teams within Global Banking and Markets.
Post-programme, you will have the opportunity to move into an entry level role within Global Markets Operations.Who can apply?
To be considered for an apprenticeship you will:
- Be on track for, or have already achieved, 300 UCAS points (or equivalent) and above

Banking: J.P Morgan Financial Services Apprenticeship Bournemouth
JP Morgan Apprenticeship Progarmme looks to attract smart and talented A-Level students to join one of their business groups in Bournemouth and to develop you to be a future leaders. These specialist school apprenticeship roles will follow a structured 18-month programme developing your personal and professional skills within the firm. For Higher Level apprenticeships (i.e., Level 4 and above) you need to be educated to A level standard and/or have successfully completed a Level 3 apprenticeship. The higher level apprenticeships last for 2-3 years.
Its a work based training programme which leads to a nationally recognised qualification. There is a range of opportunities available in areas such as financial management, marketing software development, IT analysis, customer services, marketing, sales, telephone banking, project management and operations.

Banking: Nationwide Apprenticeships
Nationwide offers work based training programmes combining paid training with nationally recognised qualifications. They offer a range of apprenticeships - from intermediate to higher. Higher Apprenticeships are where you work towards a degree (equivalent to a foundation or honours) over 3-5 years. This provides the opportunity to join the graduate scheme once you have completed the higher apprenticeship.
On an Advanced Apprenticeship you work towards an NVQ level 3 over 12-18 months.
Banking: Nomura Apprenticeships
Nomura offers a number of apprenticeship programmes which include; HR, Multimedia, Operations, Real Estate and Technology.
They currently offer HR apprentices in the following areas:: HR Advisor, CAO Apprentice, Graduate Recruitment, Learning & Development and Analyst Centre.
The primary role of Multimedia is to provide in-house Audio Visual & Multimedia support with event management.The role will provide you with a solid background in creating, operating and servicing Audio Visual technologies for the corporate environment in line with the InfoComm AV Certified Technologies Specialist (CTS) accreditation. The role will also expose you to industry standard Video Conferencing solutions, with an overview of Broadcast Hardware and Film Editing Software.
As an Operations Apprentice you will be involved in:
- Processing, controlling, confirming and settling transactions
- Researching and troubleshooting problems such as resolving booking issues and cash breaks
- Documenting process flows and creating procedure manuals for the functions performed
- Reviewing current processes and procedures for improvements, reduce risks and increase controls
- Assisting with client service initiatives
- Building successful relationships with colleagues in Mumbai
The main activities of the Real Estate & Services department include property acquisition, disposal and space utilisation, general operations, administration, maintenance and repair, corporate travel and services, and health and safety.
The Technology roles will see you working with one of their industry leading technology teams. In your first year you’ll spend time gaining a relevant NVQ qualification. If successful you’ll then go on to study for further qualifications in your second year whilst having the opportunity to progress your IT career in a wide range of roles. They offer roles within Development, Support and Infrastructure. Within the Development team, you’ll be working on cutting edge applications across a number of business lines. In Support you could be responsible for a number of systems that are critical to the running of the bank. If you prefer the Infrastructure side, you’ll be working on the infrastructure that supports all the banks major applications across the bank, from web applications to staff email and messaging.
Banking: Santander Higher Apprenticeships
Santander offers a number of apprenticseshops programmes. they include higher level schemes in Finance, Relationship Management and HR and degree level scheme in technology and operations. They are all 4 yearprogrammes and you require a minimum of 2 A Levels at grade C or above. You also need GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above.
You will be able to embark on the Chartered Banking Programme which is a 4-year journey which allows you to gain a Professional Banking Certificate, Diploma, Avanced Diploma and finally Chartered Banker. At the end of the training, you will be ready to take on a specilaist sales role, a team leader role or a more technical specilaist role.
The selection process involves an online application & CV, online testing, a telephone interview, interviews amd assessment centre. You need to be prepared to work and travel to Santander branches. Positions could be in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Leicester, Bootle or Bradford.

Banking: UBS Apprenticeships
UBS offer a range of apprenticeships in finance, wealth management, technology, operations and compliance. In addition to the exciting challenges from your day-to-day role, you'll get classroom based training on a variety of technical and behavioural topics. You'll also work towards acquiring a Financial Services qualification which is recognised across the industry.
The finance programme is 18 months in length. A normal day will differ from role to role, but typically will include:
- Management and resolution/execution of assigned responsibilities (e.g. investigation into risk related queries, processing of corporate actions, analysis of reports and commentary).
- Dealing with stakeholder/client queries.
- Reporting/providing transparency to stakeholders/clients.
- Some roles may include involvement in strategic initiatives (e.g. regulatory, change driven, communication agenda)
- Minimum of 5 GCSE’s including Maths and English at B grade
- Minimum of 240 UCAS points or equivalent ( 96 UCAS points post September 2017)
AAT – Association of Accounting Technicians As an Accountancy Apprentice with Kaplan, you will complete the AAT qualification, of which UBS deliver Level 2 (Certificate) Level 3 (Diploma) & Level 4 (Diploma). The AAT qualification will be completed at a Kaplan training centre or via the Live Online Learning platform. Apprenticeships will include the NVQ, Technical Certificate, Functional Skills (if required) and ERR.
