National Grid – Higher & Degree Apprenticeship
National Grid owns and manages the grids to which many different energy sources are connected. Their job is to connect people to the energy they use. In Britain they run systems that deliver gas and electricity across the entire country. In the North Eastern states of the US, they provide power directly to millions of customers. They effectively join everything up.
In the first year of your Higher or Degree Apprenticeship, you will spend time at either the National Training Academy in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, National Grid House, Warwick or St Catherines Lodge, Wokingham completing a variety of training at these sites or via online learning.
You will also spend time working alongside managers and colleagues, developing a sound understanding of your business area.
Year two involves continuing with academic qualifications and continuing to build your skills, spending time at their academy centres or Aston University (depending on the programme you choose) and learning on the job with the support of your manager.
Some of the programmes extend over a third or 4th year. You’ll spend most of your time on site, putting your training into practice and setting the foundation you need to go far.

To join the programme they require 2 A Levels at grades A* – C and 1 must be Maths, Physics or Engineering. Alternatively you can have BTEC certificate or BTEC Diploma Level 3 or HNC/HND in engineering.
The recruitment process includes an application form, a situational judgement test, telephone motivation discussion, and an assessment centre, comprising competency interview, a group exercise, and individual planning exercise and a colour blindness test.
