Going to university and pursuing a degree is not the only option available to bright students. With the significant cost of a degree combined with its potential devaluation, you may want at least to consider your options. There are a number of firms offering very attractive School Leaver Programmes. These are well paid and you may find run parallel to many graduate schemes. They have the attraction of being less competitive at A level entry, therefore gaining you entry into an organisation that you may struggle to secure as a graduate, when the competition is fiercer. You will also be debt free. These schemes are becoming increasingly popular with employers.

Cyber Security: BT Degree Apprenticeship

bt logoBT offer a Cyber Security degree apprenticeship, which allows you to thwart cyber crime, decrypt data and untangle malware. The programme develops a blend of technical skills across digital security, information assurance and risk, to help apprentices onto a fantastic career path into Cyber Security.

During your apprenticeship, you'll be doing a real job. Typically this will be in either BT's Security Operations Centre, within the security implementation teams, or with the security architects. They also have apprenticeship positions working in some of the more specialised security departments.

You'll go to college – typically for two weeks out of every six, and you will be expected to complete college work in between times.

Entry requirements - To be considered for the Cyber Security apprenticeship programme you will need to achieve (or have achieved) 3 A-Levels with a minimum of BBC grades, which must include a STEM subject at a minimum grade B. In addition you will need to have a minimum of 4 GCSE's at grade 4-9 (C or above) including English Language and Maths.

Government: MI5 Technical Apprenticeship

MI5. Technical Apprenticeship is aHigher Apprenticeship like no other. You'll be working with MI5, SIS and GCHQ to learn about - and work with - some of the world's best, most cutting edge technologies that sit at the heart of British intelligence. During the two year scheme you'll gain a recognised qualification (foundation degree) and unique insight into a world that you won't find on any university course. You will primarily be based at GCHQ in Cheltenham, where two thirds of your first year is classroom-based training. In your second year, you will spend about a third of your time in the classroom and the rest doing placements with MI5, SIS or GCHQ. You'll need three A Levels (or equivalent) at grades A-C, including at least two in science, technology or maths-related subjects.  

Information Technology: BT Higher and Full Degree Apprenticeships

bt logoBT offers a number of technical apprenticeships including one in information technology. You will work in network design & management, software design or cyber security. All roles in IT are best suited to those with problem solving abilities and an aptitude for understanding the needs of customers. 

This is a full degree apprenticeship in IT. This allows you to complete a full honours degree alongside your employment. You will not pay student fees, and will earn a wage throughout. To be eligible you must have attained 3 A levels at grades BCC or above, or an equivalent qualification. The full degree apprenticeships are located in London, Ipswich and Belfast. 


Software roles involve working to design, develop, implement, test and support software applications that help BT to run its networks and systems. This could include anything from working on web applications, apps for smart phones and tablets or on BT’s internal systems.


There is a broad array of network roles. This could include opportunities to test global networks  - new connections or on existing networks. It could also include working on the planning, installing and commissioning of new network elements.

Cyber Security

The cyber security team are operationally responsible end-end security for BT Networks and to ensure that BT is protected from network threats, attacks and vulnerabilities, both known and emerging in a forever evolving threat landscape. Cyber security apprentices contribute to the development and improvement of security processes and procedures, as well as support the technical leads for specific deployment projects with responsibility for ensuring the technical integrity.


IT: Dyson Apprenticeship

dysonDyson offers a number of apprenticeships in IT, engineering and finance. Their IT function is the nerve centre of Dyson and spans their online presence, retail, customer care, marketing support, security, and the front and back office technology that drives the business .Joining as an IT apprentice you will be supported by industry experts and gain experience across service desk support, change management, operating systems, infrastructure and more. Through a mix of mentoring and innovative training, Dyson will help you translate your technical aptitude into business-ready skills - setting you up for a successful career at Dyson. They also sponsor you to study towards technical qualifications. You’ll have study time and support, as well as having all course fees covered and a competitive salary.


You’ll have finished your A’levels and, as you’ll be working with internal and external parties, experience with customers would be beneficial. You need to have a true passion for IT and an aptitude to learn and develop yourself. 

Project Management: BAE Systems Apprenticeship

beaBAE Systems offer a five year Project Control Foundation Scheme. You’ll have the opportunity to earn an Honours degree in Project Management, while undertaking various placements within the business. You'll be joining Military Air & Information based at Warton or Samlesbury  — the part of BAE Systems that designs, manufactures and supports some of the world's most advanced military aircraft. At the completion of the course you can look forward to the possibility of taking up a full-time position as a Project Controller. As a Project Controller you'll be the eyes and ears of the project, ensuring that it stays on track. A key benefit of this role is that you'll get a broad view across the project and can see how the jigsaw fits together.

To apply for this programme, you'll need academic qualifications of above 240 UCAS points. This could mean 3 grade C passes at A-Level, a Distinction profile in a National Certificate or Merit profile in a National Diploma

Research & development: Unilever Apprenticeships

unileverUnilever offer a number of higher apprenticeships. Roles are offered in Business & Technology, R&D and Supply Chain & Engineering. If you look in your fridge, or on the bathroom shelf, you’re bound to see one of Unilever's well-known brands. They create, market and distribute the products that people choose to feed their families and keep themselves and their homes clean and fresh. Brands such as Ben & Jerrys, Persil, Cif and Dove belong to Unilever. 

There are 3 R&D Higher Apprenticeships. The chemistry one is 4 years in length based in the Wirral. You will study for a BSc or BEng. It involvesa combination of workplace learning and higher education. You will actively contribute to the creation and innovation of Unilever products. 


Typically three grade ‘B’ passes at ‘A’-level in relevant subjects although offers are made on the basis of interview performance


  • Level 4 certificate (HNC) in Chemistry
  • SIP accredited Smart Higher Apprenticeship certificate
  • BSc(Honours) in Chemistry (University of Liverpool)


Unilever R&D Port Sunlight, Wirral for work placements

Wirral Metropolitan College (Birkenhead) for 1st year academic studies (HNC) or 1st & 2nd year academic studies (HND)

Liverpool University for 2nd-4th year academic studies

Unilver also offer 2 further apprenticeships, namely packaging technology and Refreshment R&D. 

The Refreshment R&D is based at Colworth (Bedfordshire)  and you build and contribute to a number of brands including Lipton, PG Tips, Flora, Magnum, Cornetto and Dove. There are two apprenticeships available. The first provides the opportunity to gain a BSc in Foods Science, Chemistry or Chemical Science. The second provides the opportunity to gain a BSc in Mathematics. Both schemes are designed to last five years dependent on the length of the programme of study. You are given one day per week during term-time to study; this can with be used for a ‘day release’ method of study or as dedicated study for a distance learning programme.

You need to have Sciences A-levels or equivalent at B grade or above (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and/or Maths).

The Packaging Technology Apprenticeship is based in The Wirral and you need two A-level passes minimum grade C (or equivalent qualifications/or be awaiting results) in Mathematics and one other subject (Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Further Maths, Electronics or Engineering).

What involves?

  • The primary focus will be the development of personal and R&D skills and competencies 
  • Years 1-5 of the programme requires part time (1 day per week term time and some evenings) attendance at John Moores University to complete a MSc /B-Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering
  • In addition, during Years 1 & 2, successful candidates will complete a diploma in packaging through the Institute of Packaging (IoP). Study for this will require approximately an additional 1 day per week.
  • The overall objective of the programme is to deliver a range of skills and competencies to meet the technical requirements of the business.

Technical: AWE Mechanical & Electrical Technical Author Apprenticeship

AWE. They play a crucial role in national defence, and are a centre of scientific and technological excellence, with some of the most advanced research, design and production facilities in the world. They offer both electrical and mechanical author apprenticeships. They both requre 3 A Levels at grade c or above. They are both 4 year schemes. As a Technical Author apprentice you will learn the skills of Mechanical or Electrical Maintenance and how to write detailed work instructions for the science and engineering community. You will work towards a HND.

Technical: Transactor Apprenticeships

Transactor Global Solutionsproduces a platform for a variety of insurance brokers worldwide. This combines a comprehensive back office solution with integrated, responsive websites and advanced call centre solutions. They currently operates from three offices in the UK. Their head office is based just outside of Winchester in a converted barn. The business is supported by a further two offices in Milton Keynes and Halifax. They also have an office in Poland. 

The following roles are available on their apprenticeship program.

Software Developer

Our software developers are trained and mentored to be responsible for development, support and maintenance of TGSL software. They provide analysis related to software development, solve problems using Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft SQL Server, and software development technologies.

Project Administrator

Our Project Administrators assist in the delivery of Transactor projects to clients through the extensive and effective use of project co-ordination, product configuration and training skills, and the application of in-depth TGSL product knowledge.

Web Designer/Developer

Our web designers are trained and mentored to be responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of TGSL e-commerce websites. They support the business in all life cycle stages from website specification to development of final product.

Release & Configuration Support Analyst

Our release & configuration support analysts are trained and mentored to be responsible for all software release and delivery of the Transactor products internally and to external clients. They are also responsible for the management of the TGSL internal IT systems.

Technical Tester

Technical testers are trained and mentored to be able to facilitate the testing of all aspects of Transactor software by building and maintaining an automation framework, as well as other test harnesses.

1st Line Support Technician

Our 1st line support technicians are trained and mentored to be able to offer first line support to the TGSL client base through incident logging and maintenance, customer query investigation and resolution, and preparation of release documentation. They also provide testing support to the Test Department.


Technology & Operations: UBS Apprenticeships

ubsUBS offer a number of apprenticeships in technology and operations. In the technology apprenticeship you’ll get to join one of the teams in the Technology organization. You’ll work towards your qualification while getting the opportunity to be a real part of the team, working with experts and learning about technology, clients, the firm and specific areas of the business.

In the Operations Apprenticeship you'll be working within Operations. The role of the ops dept is to deliver best-in-class post trade services across the Investment Bank, Wealth Management and Asset Management, by enhancing and simplifying where possible the bank processes from the trading floor through to UBS systems capabilities. You will also work towards acquiring the Investment Operations Certificate; a Financial Services industry recognised qualification. You will need a minimum of 240 UCAS points or equivalent ( 96 UCAS points post September 2017) and B in Math and English in GCSE. 

There is also a compliance and operational risk control apprenticeship. 

Technology: Accenture Apprenticeships

accentureAccenture offer a number of Apprenticeship programmes both in London and Newcastle. These include: 

  • a digital and technology degree apprenticeship in either Warwick of London - you will study towards a degree level qualification in Information Technology. 
  • A technology apprenticeship in London
  • A software developer apprenticeship in Newcastle

 They have two routes to the Degree Apprenticeship. The Trailblazer IT Apprenticeship, which does not require any academic requirements, lasts for 4 years and leads to a BSc. in Digital & Technology Solutions. And, the Degree Apprenticeship, which lasts for 3 years, is open to candidates with ‘A’ levels or equivalent, and results in a BSc. in Digital & Technology Solutions. During these apprenticeships, you’ll be kept busy with a mix of on-the-job experience as well as structured training and courses.

The software developer programme in Newcastle is offering opportunities for apprentices to join the UK Delivery Centre in Newcastle. With expert training throughout and a Degree in IT (Information Technology) when you complete the scheme, it's an experience that will prepare you for long-term success. You’ll apply for a software engineering position and you’ll have the opportunity to work and develop skills in different areas such as web development, programming, testing and technical architecture. Whilst you don’t need any qualifications to apply, all of the apprentices complete a degree in software engineering over 3 or 4 years (depending on your prior knowledge and learning). Throughout the programme you will work on different projects aligned to Accenture business needs, gaining skills and experience that will suit your development. 

Technology: AstraZeneca IT Apprenticeship Programme

MedImmune is AstraZeneca’s worldwide biologics research and development arm.  They are one of very few innovation-driven biopharmaceutical companies to span discovery, development, manufacturing, distribution and worldwide commercialisation.They develop ideas into life-changing medicines. They discover, develop, manufacture and market small molecules and biologics focused on three key areas – oncology; cardiovascular and metabolic diseases; and respiratory, inflammation and autoimmunity.

Their IT Apprenticeship offers a real alternative to full time University, with the opportunity to study for a BSc in Digital and Technology Solutions, whilst working alongside world class industry leaders, gaining valuable workplace experience in key projects straight away. Over four years, we will support you on your journey every step of the way, with a buddy, mentor and line manager always there to help and guide you. You can undertake the apprenticeship at any AstraZeneca site across the UK, such as Luton, Cambridge or Macclesfield.

bt logoBT offers a range of Higher and degree IT apprenticeships. These include software, networks, TV & Digital Media and Reserach & Innovation. As an apprentice you will earn a salary, work alongside and learn on the job from experienced BT colleagues to gain job-specific skills. In addition, you will work towards a nationally recognised professional qualification.


The full degree Software apprenticeship roles involve working to design, develop, implement, test and support software applications that help BT to run its networks and systems. This could include anything from working on web applications, apps for smart phones and tablets or on BT’s internal systems. Regardless of the type of software role you do, at BT, you’ll get to experience the full deployment process in a large corporate environment.

During the apprenticeship you will work towards a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions

There is a broad array of network roles within BT. As an apprentice network engineer you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a number of areas including testing the latest networking technology, upgrading the existing network and the planning, installing and running of network elements.

TV & Digital Media

The TV & Digital Media roles will get you involved in the design, delivery and support of BT TV and all the associated systems that have to work together to provide a complete, end to end, TV service. You’ll also be working on the design, delivery and support of BT’s UK and Global Media Networks which carries content for customers such as the BBC, ITV & Star TV. During your apprenticeship with BT TV & Content you will rotate around a number of teams. During the apprenticeship you will work towards a BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions.

Research & Innovation

During your apprenticeship, you’ll work in a number of technical areas, helping to solve problems for the business and  customers. At the end of your apprenticeship you’ll be on your way to becoming an expert in your chosen specialism. The academic partner for this apprenticeship is the University of Exeter, and apprentices will work towards an BSc (Hons) in Digital and Technology Solutions, specialising in Data Analytics or Cyber Security.

Full degree - You will need to achieve (or have achieved) 3 A-Levels with a minimum of AAB grades which must include one of the following subjects Maths, Physics, Computing, Electronics, Engineering. In addition you will need to have a minimum of 6 GCSE's at grades 6 – 9 (GCSE B or above) including English Language and Maths and 2 additional STEM subjects.

Technology: Cap Gemini Degree Apprenticeships

capgemminiCap Gemini offers a sponsored degree apprenticeship programme. Its a 4.5 year programme. You study for a BSc (Honours) in Digital & Technology Solutions degree at Aston University. Roles can include Software Developer, Technical Applications Consultant, Insights & Data Consultant or Cyber Security. The degree has three, eighteen month stages, each equivalent to a normal academic year. Each stage comprises three six-month blocks. This pattern of study is designed to fit around full-time employment and uses a blended learning approach, which mixes distance learning, work-based study and attendance at on-campus study days.

You will need a minimum of 7 GCSE's A* – C including Maths and English as well as at least CCC grades at A-level or a minimum of 1 Distinction at BTEC.



Technology: CGI Higher IT Apprenticeship Programme

cgiCGI is a technology consulting firm, formerly called Logica. CGI is one of the largest IT and business process services providers in the world. They offer both level 4 higher apprenticeships as well as Degree Apprenticeships which offer the chance to gain a qualification, debt free, whilst starting your professional career. Their Degree Apprenticeships are with Aston University, Glasgow Caledonian University, Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Winchester. During your apprenticeship you’ll study for a recognised technology qualification. 

The Higher Apprenticeships are a level 4 qualification; training you in key areas of the business. These can include:

  • Software Development
  • Project Management
  • Business Intelligence
  • Cyber Security

These programmes take 2 years to complete and are run in partnership with a national training provider, QA.

Location: Reading, Leatherhead, Birmingham, London, Bridgend, Glasgow, Edinburgh

Due to the nature of their business, you work on ‘projects’. This means you’re never doing the same thing and you can have different roles across various projects, so there is no ‘typical day’. It also may mean you are working from your base office, on client site, in another CGI office or sometimes from home.

Your studies will be complemented by on-the-job training gained on live projects in areas as diverse as Space and Defence, Bid Management, Cyber Security and Project Management. Previous apprentices have worked on top-secret national security projects, played their part in sending satellites to Mars and helped to win multi-million pound projects – all while guaranteeing that all our projects are planned and executed to the high standards our clients expect.

Entry Requirements ( for higher apprenticeships) 

  • To have or be predicted to achieve at least 64 UCAS points across two A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above (excluding General Studies) including a computing/IT/STEM subject gained in the same academic year
  • or a completed Advanced IT Apprenticeship.
  • Also a minimum of five A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent), including English, Maths and Science.

The following degree apprenticeships are also available:

  • BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree at Winchester University:They have two programmes; one that is technical, designed for those who want to pursue an IT/Computing career and another with a business focus for those that are interested in Business Management and Project Management careers.This course will take three years to complete spending one day a week studying in Winchester and the other four developing your career at CGI based in CGI’s Reading or Leatherhead offices. You could work in everything from Space and Defence to Bid Management, Marketing, Programming, Cyber-Security and Project Management.
  • BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions degree at Aston University: This course will take four and a half years to complete. The Aston Programme is sponsored by the Energy, Utilities and Telecoms (EUT) area of the business and you could be based from Birmingham, Leatherhead, London and Reading offices.
  • BSc (Hons) Software Development Graduate Level Apprenticeship - Glasgow Caledonian University. You will study one day a week at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), whilst spending the other four days a week developing your career on real-life projects at CGI. Your role will be to deliver digital engineering capability and encompass a rotation programme which will allow you to learn different programming languages and try new roles. You could be involved in: 
    • Resolving IT issues
    • Programming
    • Software testing
    • learning how software is designed and developed 
  • BSc (Hons) IT Management for Business (ITMB) -Graduate Level Apprenticeship- Edinburgh Napier University:You will study one day a week at Edinburgh Napier University, whilst spending the other four days a week developing your career on real-life projects at CGI.This course will take four years to complete. You’ll be proving yourself from day one – solving problems, taking responsibility, making decisions, working on classified mission-critical projects.

Entry Requirements for Winchester and Aston degrees

  • To have or be predicated to achieve at least 120 UCAS points across three A-Levels or equivalent BTECs at grade C or above (excluding General Studies) gained in the same academic year (or equivalent) or
  • a completed Advanced IT Apprenticeship.
  • Also a minimum of five A*-C GCSEs (or equivalent), including English, Maths and Science.
  • For the IT focused programmes, your A-Levels (or equivalent e.g. Scottish Nationals, BTEC etc) should include an IT related subject, unless you can show strong technical (programming/development) ability through work experience or extra-curricular activities.

Entry Requirements for the scottish degrees:

  • The preferred requirement is 4 Highers at Grade B or above including 1 in Maths, Physics or Computing (equivalent qualifications are accepted) unless you can show strong technical (programming/development) ability through work experience or extra-curricular activities.
  • At least 7 Scottish National 5 at grade 1-3 including English or Maths (equivalent qualifications are accepted)

Technology: Cisco Apprenticeships

ciscoCisco is a worldwide leader in IT, providng solutions to connect things that were previously unconnected. They connect everythng - people, processes, data and things. During the one- to three-year programme, you’ll explore a variety of roles within Cisco, giving you a chance to explore a specific technology or work with specific teams. You'll receive applicable Cisco certifications via classroom training or through a local university.

Technology: Dyson Engineering Degree


Dyson offer an engineering degree at the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology. As an Undergraduate Engineer, you work alongside their Global Engineering team from day one. You are responsible for live projects, all while studying for your engineering degree from Warwick Manufacturing Group, the University of Warwick.

The course is four years long. The first two years will give you a strong foundation in engineering theory and practice before you specialise in years three and four. The engineering fundamentals that you learn in your studies will be put to practice through your role within Dyson's Global Engineering team.

The degree has been developed by Dyson engineers alongside academics at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), the University of Warwick. WMG have a long-standing reputation for bridging the gap between industry and academia through their strong links with global engineering companies. As a first year Undergraduate Engineer you will live on-site in modern accommodation pods. The campus is within easy driving distance of Bristol, Bath and Gloucester.

Your tuition fees will be paid by Dyson, and you will earn a salary from the start, meaning you could graduate debt-free.

The role

At the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, you’re an engineer from day one. You’ll learn about engineering through hands-on experience and work alongside a team of Dyson technology experts three days of the week. With Dyson’s expertise across motors, fluid dynamics, separation systems, energy storage, robotics, software and hair science, you’ll have the chance to work within a number of technical disciplines.

In your first year, you’ll complete three engineering rotations, focusing on mechanical, electronics hardware, and software. There are three more rotations in your second year, in different teams. This will help to consolidate your understanding of engineering fundamentals in practice.

For your final two years, they will give you the opportunity to state your preferred pathway. Dyson will place you in a team depending on your preferences, skills and the business need.

Entry requirements

You will then build on these skills in teams with EY clients in between your block release sessions. Over the 3 years you can expect to experience web-based learning, shadowing senior colleagues and team members, and training courses with our in-house experts.

What they are looking for?

You need to be a bright, independent thinker with a serious interest in technology. You’ll need to have GCSEs in Maths and English, and they also accept applications from A Level and BTEC students too, no matter what your grades. Logically minded with a strong attention to detail, you’ll be able to spot solutions to problems quickly. And you’ll also need to be a team player, as you’ll be working with others throughout your apprenticeship to devise innovative, technology solutions. Strong numerical or analytical skills are essential and you’ll also need to be a great communicator.

Technology: Fujitsu Advanced IT Apprenticeship

fujitsuFujitsu are one of the worlds largest IT suppliers. They offer a range of intermediate and advenace apprenticeships. Their advanced IT apprenticsehips offers work with Release Management and / or Integration teams to acquire skills primarily through on the job training. They are looking for someone who has understanding of Microsoft Windows OS, Programming and logic skills, preferably Visual Basic or CMD scripting and Microsoft Windows Server products, including Windows Scripting, installing, configuring and supporting Windows Servers.

You need 3 A levels at C grade and above (or equivalent).

They also offer a degree apprenticeship programme where they will sponsor your studies as well as pay you. Your role would be based in our Fujitsu Basingstoke offices for the Defence and National Security account and will also involve you attending lectures at Winchester University to complete a BSc (Hons) Digital & Technology Solutions degree over a 4 year period. You need 280 UCAS points and experience or an interest in IT. 

The degree programme runs for 4 years and will provide you an opportunity to attend lectures
at Winchester University whilst carrying out a role in Fujitsu. Towards the end of this degree you will have a period of specialisation with a dissertation and project to complete at work linked to business requirements. Each module you study will match up to the business area within Fujitsu that you will be working in, ensuring you are receiving work-based learning that is relevant to your course. 

Technology: Goldman Sachs Technology Apprenticeships

As a Digital and Technology degree apprentice, you will play a key role defining, designing, developing and maintaining the IT systems upon which the business depends. 

Whats involved?

GSK offer Digital and Technology degree apprenticeships in an R&D setting – either in the IT function or in Product Development and Supply.  This apprenticeship will provide you with the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge in a number of areas. These might include:

  • Analysing business processes
  • Present ideas for system improvements, including cost proposals
  • Developing user requirements
  • Testing applications in controlled, real situations before going live
  • Developing and delivering training for users
  • Overseeing system change controls
  • Supporting internal audits and external regulatory inspections

 IT Apprenticeship

The IT apprenticeship programme provides you with the opportunity to work with and gain an in-depth understanding of world-leading technologies used throughout GSK. Its a  three year programme and offers you the chance to obtain nationally recognised qualifications whilst gaining valuable, paid work experience. You will work towards completing a Level 4, higher apprenticeship.

Whats involved?

You will be aligned to one of the main IT functions, combining on-the-job learning with a programme of training and development. Your role may involve:

  • Improving business processes
  • Supporting Manufacturing processes and technologies
  • Developing new applications
  • Designing new ways to use IT services

The scheme runs for three years and is offered at various GSK sites across the UK including Brentford, Stevenage, Ware, Worthing and Barnard Castle.

  • You must also have/be predicted to achieve at least 200 UCAS points, or 80 in the 2017 tariff. 

Technology: IBM Apprenticeship Programmes

The Programme

During the scheme, you will spend at least two days a week (term time only) at the Queen Mary University campus in Mile End, London.  The remaining three days of the week will be spent working in one of the busy IT teams within the John Lewis head office in Victoria, central London.

  • IT Infrastructure Operations

Cyber Security Progarmme

The services involved in digital security are varied and wide-ranging. Solutions Architect

Join as a Solution Architect and you’ll be supporting the senior design authority on a project or programmes within the UK IS organisation. Working with IS and business stakeholders it will be your job to make sure all solutions are in line with IS strategy and standards while maximising National Grid’s return on IS investment.

Project Management

The Project Controls function helps support the delivery of large capital programmes and it's a real growth area in this complex business. And as customers' expectations are high, it brings these projects under even greater scrutiny. Project Controls provide a wide range of support services to the business which means you'll immerse yourself in them all – from Estimating and Risk Management, to Cost Management and Planning.


Technology: Nomura Technology Apprenticeship Program

nomuraNomura is a leading financial services group and the pre-eminent Asian investment bank. It is launching a Technology Apprenticeship Program. It is aimed at young people aged 18 or over, who are motivated, ambitious, with a keen interest in Technology. The programme will provide you with opportunities to develop your skills and the knowledge you need to progress your career within one of Nomura's industry leading technology teams. In your first year you’ll spend time gaining a relevant NVQ qualification in partnership with Just IT Training. If successful you’ll then go on to study for further qualifications in your second year whilst having the opportunity to progress your IT career in a wide range of roles.


There are three key areas on the Apprenticeship Scheme:

Within the Development team, you’ll be working on cutting edge applications across a number of business lines. In Support you could be responsible for a number of systems that are critical to the running of the bank. They offer a range of apprenticeships in engineering, food technology and operations. 

Technology: Red River Software Engineer Apprenticeship

Red RiverSoftware is a software development company focused on designing outstanding technology that can transform and revive businesses. They offer the BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions (Software Engineer) Degree Apprenticeship which is run by the University of Chichester.


The Programme

This 4 year course incorporates an in-house apprenticeship that provides you with a split of university-based modules and hands-on work experience in a relevant business. You will be employed full-time (4 days per week) in Horsham, West Sussex and attends the university on a day release basis (1 day per week) at the Bognor Regis campus. On successful completion, you will be awarded an honours degree. The core of the degree focuses on the study of IT in business and includes a blend of technology, business, project and transferable skills. Integrating academic learning and on-the-job practical training ensures that you graduate with the experience that employers need, now and in the future. 

The core comprises around 60% of the programme and includes the following topics: -Foundations of Information Technology Systems -Systems Development Fundamentals -Data Fundamentals -Information and Cyber Security Fundamentals -Business Organisation Fundamentals -IT Project Management Fundamentals -Computer Systems and Network Fundamentals -Interpersonal and Foundation Skills Fundamentals.

About you 

They are seeking people who have a genuine interest in or affinity to software development and are particularly interested in people who can demonstrate some experience of projects or coding. The successful applicants will be interested in learning C#.NET, AngularJs, SQL, Mongo, MVC, Web API and a number of other technologies and platforms. During your time with Red River you will get experience of the full software project life-cycle and agile software development.

SANTANDER Santander offers a number of digital and IT  Degree Apprenticeship based in Leicester or Milton Keynes. 

  The Degree programme is designed to bring together a range of digital and technology disciplines, with a balance of technical competence and intellectual and practical skills that will support you both as a learner and as future digital and technology solutions professional.

The programme combines innovative study content with real-world experience and insight from expert tutors, delivering the practical skills and industry knowledge to help you to excel in the workplace.

The programme runs for four years and is split in to three core modules: Stage 1 (Level 4): 18 months, Certificate of Higher Education Stage 2 (Level 5): 18 months, Diploma of Higher Education Stage 3 (Level 6): 18 months, Bachelor of Digital and Technical Solutions

During your time on the Apprenticeship, you will look at the following areas: information technology systems, systems development, information and cyber security, business organisation and data analytics, project management and computer networks.

Technology: Sellafield Apprenticeships

sellafieldSellafield is a global centre for nuclear engineering management. They pioneered the harnessing of nuclear power to generate electricity for the country. Now they are set international standards in high-hazard reduction. They offer a range of degree apprenticeships which provide a balance of on-the-job training and experience whilst enabling you to also study for a degree without having to cover the cost of tuition.   • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades A* to C (Step 9-4) including English Language, a Science subject (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Science or similar) and Mathematics at Grade B (Step 6) or above.
  • Minimum of 96 UCAS points, ( for the degree appraenticeships this needs to include 2 STEM subjects at A-Level e.g. Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Science. Other Level 3 STEM qualifications may be considered.)

Technology: Severn Trent Apprenticeships

severn trentSevern Trent offer a number of apprenticeships, one of which is the Digital Information Systems degree apprenticeship. 

This is a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship programme.

Your rotation placements on the scheme focus on developing the key skills and experience that you’ll require to be a key member of the Information Systems teams here. Either through working in service delivery teams, app development and support teams or key projects. You’ll combine on-the-job learning with formal, nationally recognised development training modules, which includes a tailored two-week induction. This is delivered by BPP and is a 4 year programme. 

What you'll be doing

You’ll get exposure to different teams across the business as you work on a combination of big budget transformation programmes and fast-moving, agile delivery projects. These could include anything from working with Developers and Analysts in the App Squad to deliver applications for colleagues’ smart devices, to developing new systems that allow identification and prevention of network failures. 

Technology: SSE IT Degree Apprenticeship

SSE, based in Havant is involved in the generation, transmission, distribution and supply of electricity, in the production, storage, distribution and supply of gas and in other energy services.

Their Degree Apprenticeship lasts for four years and allows you to study for a degree at the same time as working full time. Your tuition fees are paid for you and you’ll be earning a salary. And at the end of the course you’ll graduate with an honours degree and the practical experience that will set you up for your career in IT.  You will study a BA (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions at the University of Chichester.

You will work 4 days a week in the business and study 1 day a week at university. 

The Programme

The IT degree apprenticeship is a day-release programme where you will rotate through various roles within IT whilst completing your IT degree over four years. From the start you’ll learn the role of IT in business, helping to solve real problems using IT. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a whole range of different areas such as emerging technology, infrastructure support, system architecture and project management. Your final six months will be spent in a job role that is likely to be your full-time job at SSE once you’ve finished your Apprenticeship.

In your first year you will complete four short placements across the Tesco Technology teams. In your second year you will complete a 12 month placement focused on your development. Over the two years, you'll also be sponsored to achieve a Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship in Technology with Hertford Regional College.

Successful apprentices will support and build the IT systems and technologies that underpin every aspect of Tesco's business. You will work on projects that are part of every customer’s shopping trip. You can also expect to support innovative systems that lead the way in retail technology.

To apply to this programme you need to have:

  • 240 UCAS Points (excluding General Studies) in one or more of the following areas: ICT, IT Technical, Science or Maths
  • Maths and English GCSE Grade C
  • A passion for technology

Technology: Unilever Higher Apprenticeships

unileverUnilever offer both Advanced and Higher IT Apprenticeships as well as Project Management Higher Apprenticeships. 

Supporting the IT teams across the UK you’ll provide real time technical support and guidance to people from across the organisation. Typical roles include Helpdesk Support Technician, IT Analyst, Software Developer or Web Developer. The Higher IT Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills required to work almost fully independently at an IT Engineer level within the business. 

The project management apprenticeship are specically designed for individuals wishing to undertake a career as a project professional. You will provide support to one department that could include Customer Development (Sales), IT, or Communications.


Technology: Vodafone Level 4 Apprenticeship

Vodafone offers a level 4 apprenticeship which leads to a foundation degree. 

Whats involved?

In your first foundation year your Apprenticeship will be taken up with modules designed to give you a broad understanding of Vodafone and teach you the skills required to underpin your later development. So you’ll spend time on areas like Project Management, Business Analysis and Business Good Practice. For most of your Apprenticeship, your weeks will be spent doing real work within the business. Your four placements will give you the opportunity to not just see but truly experience a wide range of products and services. 

Every four to eight weeks you’ll spend one full week studying off site. You’ll also get additional study time in-between where you’ll watch presentations delivered by video conference and participate in discussions and collaboration sessions with other students. Development study weeks are held every twelve weeks. You’ll spend one full week studying off site at different Vodafone site across the country, giving you the chance to experience more of Vodafone and see the impact of technology on people’s lives.

In your second year you’ll choose one of three specialist areas to develop your career. As you work through the Foundation Degree modules, you will also take part in soft skills workshops where you will hone the skills and experience you need to take you into your future career.
